details in the fabric exhibition at sikka . 2013

for last month's sikka art fair, i was one of six exhibiting designers participating in an amazing initiative titled 'design house'. conceived by two of the most inspiring graphic designers i know; hadeyeh & hala of mobius design studio, i was invited to push myself & work outside my comfort zone to create a new project for the initiative. along with myself & the mobius girls, there were layan attarinada al yafaeitalin & tulip hazbar, who all created unique individual projects on the theme of preservation.
the design house, situated in cozy house number 53, included an exhibition that showcased each of the participant's works, ranging from typography to illustration, to archiving and architecture. a series of workshops were also held, recreating techniques used in producing the exhibited works. & a closing feast to mark the end of all our efforts was held, to meet, eat, converse & interact.
for the exhibition, my project 'details in the fabric' contextualized the opposing themes of preservation and deterioration, based on living in a society that struggles with juggling to preserve traditions/culture with modern lifestyles. the technique used in creating this series involved screen printing contrasting visuals onto pre-existing fabrics obtained from dubai’s traditional fabric souqs. these vibrant textiles are commonly used in tailoring traditional garments for men and/or women in the emirates, with geometric shapes or organic motifs adorned as patterns. the silkscreened graphics allowed for another visual layer onto these fabrics; communicating the conflict between the two previously mentioned ideas through abstract and/or literal themed illustrations. visitors at the house were able to observe the details of the visuals on the fabrics and absorb the varied narratives communicated through these pieces.
overall, the design house was a brilliant experience. working alongside awesome like-minded designers reminded me of the fun times as a design student in college. creating these pieces definitely fed into my creative process when working on projects, & definitely pushed me to create a different aesthetic which i loved. the project also gave the opportunity to contribute to other initiatives; by creating or contributing related pieces for other projects, including place mats which were sold at this year's dxb store & a contribution to this year's art4sight auction to raise funds (fingers crossed) for noor dubai's fight against blindness.
for more information on design house at this year's sikka, & what comes next (we hope), stay tuned here & here.

before ending this, a few thank you's are in order. to my design house girls - thank you for making me be a part of this initiative. i hope we continue to work together in the near future. thank you for making me laugh, cry, frustrated & loved during this experience. i hope you're proud of me, as i am proud of each & every one of you. this is something i will always remember. love you all.
thank you sikka for accepting design house as a part of the fair programme, & accepting my project too.
a final, special thank you goes to my friend salama for helping out when she had a lot on her plate, & giving her all to make sure my project was ready on time. thank you & much love.

back by popular demand

khalid says relax tee . 2011 . 2013

back by popular demand, the iconic 'khalid says relax' tee is back for another limited run of a 100 tees.
the first run sold out at 2011's dxb store at art dubai. & like all krossbreed tees, once they're out, they're never reprinted. but for this year's edition of the dxb store, a section called 'dxb store classics' is set up, selling popular products from the past. so i made an exception, & reprinted a final limited run of this now classic tee.
make sure to head to art dubai over the next few days to get your own tee. who knows, they might sell out again...

city portraits notebooks . 2013

it's great to be back posting new projects! apologies for the long pause. it has been a busy few months...
so the new year's already underway & as always, new projects come along. for those who already know, march in dubai is filled with art events & fairs including art dubai, sikka & design days dubai. & along with these fairs come amazing projects & initiatives. one of my favorite initiatives that i look forward to & am a loyal fan of every year is the dxb store.
the dxb store brings together some of the best independent creatives; promoting & selling limited edition designed products. the variety is enough for everybody's tastes. for the last 3 editions, i've been privileged to have showcased my work at the dxb store. it's actually where a lot of people got to know what krossbreed is all about. it's so rewarding to see people wearing my t-shirts or carrying my notebooks & other items.
for this year's edition, i've created a new line of notebooks titled ‘city portraits’. these hand held sketchbooks pay homage to the true underdogs of the city. from the grocery delivery boy, to the men in orange keeping dubai clean, these notebooks pay tribute to the hard working souls we tend to forget.
if you're visiting any of the fairs over the next few days, make sure to pop by any of the dxb store branches & purchase a notebook (or 3) for yourself.

no evil mural (signature) . 2012

i was invited to create a mural for the maraya art centre as part of their initiative to promote local talent.
for the concept, i decided to communicate the famous phrase 'hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil'. as we are all familiar with this phrase being communicated by the iconic monkeys gesturing each action, i wanted to communicate the phrase with my visual aesthetic, & relating the phrase in context to the region & community of the arab world, combining abstract forms with subtle cultural references & arabic language. the phrase 'hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil' has been interpreted in many ways over the years. my visual interpretation of the phrase is it's always better to 'hear, see & speak' the right things in order to be a good person, & move away from all things evil...
a few thank you's are in order; this project wouldn't have been possible without the maraya art centre & their support. so thank you to the team for making this possible. a huge thanks also goes out to my favorite girls in the world layan & tulip, for helping me complete this mural on time. without their help, this mural probably wouldn't exist...
if anyone's interested in seeing the mural in person, make sure to drop by the maraya art centre to check it out. as all mural's have an expiration date, 'no evil' has a lifespan of at least 8 months until it disappears to make room for the next one by another talented artist.

from me to you tee . 2012

the illustration above was my second contribution/design on t-shirts, for the present exhibition.
'from me to you' derived from the question’s ‘what would you leave as a present?’ & ‘ on a personal level, how are you present in the current landscape?'. 'from me to you' pays homage to the lovely gesture of gift giving & will hopefully leave a memorable mark on whoever purchases them. when the world grows older, & i no longer exist, i hope these t-shirts act as a memory of who i was, & the presence i had as an individual & designer.
this limited edition tee comes in a female cut only, & are currently on sale at the maraya art centre for the duration of the exhibition. again, if sharjah seems to be out of your way, you can always get in touch directly via email...
i dedicate this t-shirt (& all the tees created so far) to everyone who's supported my work & to all the krossbreed lovers out there...
